A cloudburst in the Sonoran Desert. Sometimes, the land will turn from baked to flooded in a matter of minutes, which can be quite frightening.

We could really do with some heavy rain round here just now though. There hasn't been a drop in over a month, and we normally get about 900mm a year...

                    Yellow Tree Peep

If peeps were real, Yellow Warblers (Setophaga petechia) would be perfect candidates.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"A small bird glows like a drop of sunlight against the open blue sky. Its body is a rich, warm yellow—so bright it seems almost lit from within. The feathers on its chest and belly are smooth and luminous, while faint reddish streaks run downward like delicate brush marks. The head carries a soft olive tint, subtle enough that it only deepens the bird’s golden tone rather than dulling it.

The warbler is perched on a textured tree branch mottled with pale lichen and patches of peeling bark. The bark’s roughness contrasts with the bird’s sleek plumage, making the warbler appear even more delicate. Its posture is alert but calm: body angled slightly forward, tail relaxed, wings folded neatly along its sides. The beak is thin and pointed, perfectly proportioned for a small insect‑gleaning songbird. Its eye is dark and round, catching a glint of light that gives the impression of curiosity or gentle awareness.

Behind the bird, the sky is a clear, soft blue—smooth and unfussy—allowing the warbler’s vivid color to stand out as the unmistakable focal point. The overall feeling is one of brightness, stillness, and the quiet beauty of a tiny creature pausing in the open air." - Microsoft Copilot

                      Good morning. ☕☕☕

                      24 July 2026

Do you remember a time when you didn’t know how to write? I do. It’s a vague, hazy memory of trying to imitate my parents by scribbling squiggly lines across a chalkboard. That’s something that supposedly happened seventy years ago. Or is it?

Is it an actual memory — or just a memory of a memory? Do I only remember it because I’ve remembered it before?
Whoosh. I just blew my own mind. 🤯

A memory of a memory of a memory is a strange concept. It’s like that old game where you line up ten people and whisper a sentence into the first person’s ear. Each person passes it along, and by the time it reaches the tenth person, the message has transformed into something completely different. If memories work the same way, how accurate can they really be? Memory is a tricky thing.

My wife and I often experience the same events together, yet years later we sometimes recall them differently. Sometimes the difference is so stark that one of us remembers something clearly while the other insists it never happened at all. Was the memory lost by one of us — or created by the other?

So how can a false memory begin?
A false memory starts when your brain fills in missing details, blends experiences, or absorbs suggestions — and then treats that new construction as if it were an actual event. It usually doesn’t happen overnight. Imagine your mother telling you a story over and over about something that happened when you were young. Eventually, you might fill in the blanks and believe you remembered it all along.

Nevertheless, the chalkboard event really happened.

“Memory is the diary we all carry about with us.” — Oscar Wilde

“What we remember is not what happened.” — Julian Barnes

“Every act of memory is an act of imagination.” — Oliver Sacks

                      Pink Stripes in Bloom

"A cluster of lilies fills the frame like a small explosion of color and delicate structure. Each bloom stretches outward on long, slender petals that curve gently at the tips, giving the flowers a graceful, ribbon-like appearance. The petals are pale pink at their edges, deepening into richer pink tones toward the center, where a bold, darker stripe runs the full length of each petal like a painted brushstroke.

The flowers gather tightly at the top of a smooth green stalk, forming a starburst of soft color against a blurred background of deep green foliage. The petals look almost weightless — thin, silky, and slightly translucent — catching the light in a way that makes them appear luminous.

The overall impression is one of elegance and quiet drama: a bouquet of long, narrow petals radiating outward, each marked with a vivid stripe that draws the eye inward. The flowers feel both delicate and confident, standing tall and open, as if reaching toward the viewer. The image is signed “© Swede’s Photographs,” adding a personal touch to the composition." - Microsoft Copilot

Normally, when we drive through country landscapes, we're looking at the landscape -- the cows and farmhouses, rolling hills and copses of trees. But this time, it was the sky that demanded our attention, filled with outrageous poofs and puffs of clouds that constantly shifted, sometimes hiding the sun, other times breaking apart and letting it shine through.

This striking Badlands Panorama showcases sweeping layers of eroded rock formations under a softly textured, partly cloudy sky, creating a dramatic yet calming visual experience. Badlands Panorama

A sweeping Badlands panorama unfolds like an ancient seafloor lifted into the sun—its layered ridges rising and falling in long, wave‑like formations that mimic the motion of tides frozen in stone. The terrain carries sediment‑soft hues—sand‑brown, clay‑gold, and shale‑gray—that resemble the subtle gradations you’d see in coastal bluffs or eroded sea cliffs, shifting gently from foreground to horizon.
Above it, a softly textured sky drifts overhead, its pale clouds spreading like sea mist across an open expanse, adding a calm, atmospheric counterbalance to the rugged formations below. The entire scene feels tidal—a landscape shaped by ancient waters, sculpted into ripples and channels that echo the rhythm of surf and shoreline.

                                                      Kite in the Blue

I spotted this Mississippi kite (Ictinia mississippiensis) circling overhead, and I’m pretty sure it spotted me right back. They’re relatively small raptors, built for high, effortless soaring, and this one seemed unusually interested in my backyard. Mississippi kites don’t typically go after other birds, but with all the anoles skittering around the house, it may have been scouting for a quick snack.

"A Mississippi kite in flight has a kind of quiet elegance, and this image captures that feeling with real clarity. The bird is suspended against a clean, cloudless blue sky, its wings stretched wide in a smooth, confident glide. The wings form a gentle crescent — long, narrow, and slightly curved — with the darker upper feathers creating a soft contrast against the lighter underside.

Its body is slim and tapered, giving the impression of a creature built for effortless movement. The head is small and rounded, angled just enough to suggest awareness and purpose. The tail fans out behind it in a neat triangle, subtly forked, acting like a rudder guiding its motion.

The overall impression is one of calm mastery: a bird that doesn’t fight the air but belongs to it. The sky around it is empty, which makes the kite feel even more solitary and serene — a single shape etched against a vast backdrop, gliding with the kind of grace that seems almost weightless." - Microsoft Copilot

"Those little white flowers you see here are known as the Arctic mountain heather, and they are highly toxic to this little pika.
Collared pika create what we call haypiles under the rocks that will serve as food for the 9 months of winter they endure beneath the snow. That’s 9 months of dead rotting plants for fungi, bacteria, and other parasites to completely destroy. That is, unless the pika layers toxic species like this arctic heather through the haypile.
This particular species of flower releases its toxic brew of phenolic compounds into the the pika's cache of food as it begins to break down. Those very same toxins, it turns out, are a natural food preservative that kills the very fungi and bacteria that would otherwise ruin an entire winter’s worth of food for the pika. And amazingly, by the time the pika makes it down to these layers, those toxins are completely harmless to the little mammal.
None of this is by accident. Researchers have documented that not only are pika meticulous at how they layer toxic plants into their haypiles, they use different species, with differing levels of toxicity, at specific levels through the cache to ensure that their food is not only well preserved but also timed to be edible for themselves as they work their way through it.
This is the most sophisticated pharmacological knowledge and behavior ever documented outside of humans."
