" Governments have tried to use export controls to limit the proliferation of what they see as dangerous cyber technology for decades, but their track record has been middling at best.
The U.S. government was behind what is perhaps history’s most spectacular failure of this approach in the early to mid-1990s. At the time, computer scientists were developing encryption technologies to secure data as it traveled over the internet. One of those encryption products was called Pretty Good Privacy, or PGP, a popular software that could encrypt data and make it virtually impossible to unscramble even if intercepted as it traveled to its intended recipient over the internet.
The U.S. government initially saw PGP as a dangerous weapon, fearing it would prevent its intelligence agencies from snooping on emails as they crossed their wires. To stop the distribution of PGP, the U.S. Customs Service opened a criminal investigation against PGP’s creator Phil Zimmermann for allegedly violating arms export controls. He fought back by publishing PGP’s source code as a printed book, igniting what is known today as the “Crypto Wars.”
Zimmermann later won a key battle when the investigation was closed, paving the way for crucial end-to-end encryption algorithms such as the one used by billions of Signal and WhatsApp users."

What's with the uptick in overly friendly Mastodon accounts that quickly want to pivot to Telegram? They all seem to follow the same script looking for Johns to sell services to.
Needless to say, I politely decline.
If they were legitimate they'd be on OnlyFans or one of its competitors not pinging random accounts here.
This is good fodder for my cyber security and scam awareness presentations, but economically I don't see how we are worth the effort. Has the Fediverse grown that much?
I'd like to understand how these groups are organized and operate from the inside, to get a fuller picture of what's happening here. Are there any YouTube interviews or podcasts that cover this?

Does anyone else here toy with scammers -- at least occasionally -- to figure out what their strategy is?
I'm no "Mike Rafone," but I do give occasional presentations on how normal people can make life harder for cyber criminals. So, it's good for me to play along sometimes to keep abreast of current trends.
Tangentially, and someone recommend a good book or scholarly article on now cyber criminals are structured and what the economic inputs and outputs look like? Literally the commission structures and how much these people have to spend in order to get 1 victim and how many victims per month is typical for a given style of scam. If that sounds like "Gang Leader for a Day" but for modern cyber crime, that's exactly what I want to read.

hey so. looking for a job (NZ or fully remote willing to hire a kiwi) in SRE, security, or linux/Unix system administration. 15 years experience administering Linux and Unix boxes, intermediate level of experience working with docker compose and containerisation and container security. Three machines, 72 docker containers. One running most of them, one running Mastodon+glitchsocial, one running the uptime monitor. encrypted root on ZFS, alpine linux, gVisor on supported containers, plan to move to Kata. Entirely willing to accept entry-level job placements, no expectation of being paid a lot or anything, just want to be doing something and move the needle a little on my current "being broke" status.
