We have the mind of Christ, but use the voice of a machine?

By Elizabeth Prata

I heard a really interesting thought on a Facebook short, of all places. It was a clip from an NPR interview with Dave Eggers, author, publisher, and Pulitzer finalist. The show was Wild Cards hosted by Rachel Martin. In it, Eggers said,

“This is the first time in history when a whole generation is being told or tempted to have a machine write for them to express themselves. But I say, you are one of one, unprecedented in in the history human evolution. There’s only one of you. So to give your voice to a machine to say, ‘Speak for me. I’m going to be silent.’ I’m going to tell a machine to express myself or to tell my narrative is such a crime against yourself.”

“It’s so dystopian, so beyond anything I could do in a dystopian novel, and I did a lot, and I never saw this coming. That an entire generation, too many of them, acquiescing to the silencing of their own voice in favor of a bland, unthinking machine to voice their souls.” –end Eggers quote

I think many of us who write or create never saw this coming. And since it’s still so new, we are grappling with the impact, fallout, and future of AI. His words made a lot of sense to me. For us Christians, though, it goes very much deeper than that.

Artificial intelligence technology has evolved faster than most Christians have been able to think about it. ~Samuel James, at Desiring God

Taking ‘evolution’ out of the equation, because that is a made-up untrue theory, and we all do realize we are uniquely made, yes, there is only one of me. Faceless evolution didn’t create me, the God of the universe did! And not only are we made purposely, intentionally, and with love by God, we are created in His image.

This notion should be on our minds every moment. It is a dignity afforded no other creature. It gives us the opportunity to speak His truth of the Gospel, reflect His character. Our voices are for the incredible privilege of sharing His Gospel and truths of the Bible. Why put a cold, metallic, faceless machine in that place of dignity?

Can we consider the possibility that swapping our own unique image-of-God voice for a voice of Artificial Intelligence is not only a crime against ourselves, but that giving away our God-given talents and creative abilities for the ease of a push-button machine may possibly be thought of as a crime against God? Should we be swapping our transformed mind of Christ at the cost of Jesus’ blood and death, for a man-made device? Just because it’s easier?

“The White House and Congress are working on a deal to clamp down on what US citizens are allowed to say online. According to new reporting by Axios, the Trump administration is negotiating with key senators in an effort to shoehorn a massive legislation package which would limit states’ abilities to regulate AI in exchange for placing broad federal limits on digital speech.

Plenty of ink has been spilled about the Trump administration’s push to revoke AI regulation from individual states. Though the White House and its allies frame this as a matter of “safety” and “national security,” the timing is telling, coming as progressive state governments move to restrict the building of AI data centers and hold tech companies liable for harms their AI systems cause.

What makes this deal particularly insidious is the trade-off at its core. Per Axios, congressional lawmakers lead by Republican Marsha Blackburn are essentially offering to surrender their ability to regulate AI in exchange for three federal censorship bills: the Kids Online Safety Act, the NO FAKES Act, and a federal age verification mandate.

While the language around these three measures suggests common-sense cyber regulation, activists say they really amount to a massive censorship regime that is fundamentally anti-democratic.

In a blistering statement, the first amendment group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) warns that “taken together, these bills would fundamentally change the internet as we know it.”

"There's a (false) story that's told about people who championed the early internet: that we were blithely certain that technology could only be a force for good, and negligently disinterested in the possibility that technology could control, extract and harm. That's demonstrably untrue: recall cyberpunk's dualism of "the street finds its own use for things" and "cyberpunk is a warning, not a suggestion."

More true is to say that early internet champions were alive to the importance of the internet, and therefore both excited about the possibilities of the internet to deliver a world of connection, idiosyncrasy, love and solidarity; and about the danger of the internet as a dystopian system of surveillance and manipulation:
          (...)
History isn't finished. Long after the AI bubble pops, there will be local models and people vibe coding homemade software that respond directly to their needs. The stuff we make on our own computers, for ourselves, is deplatformed from its inception. It's part of the life we can build in technology's "shadowy corners" that we used to just call "technology." The fact that this stuff is utterly unsuited to be production code makes it inherently unmonetizable. It's how the street finds its own use for things:"

"We, the undersigned organizations and individuals, are deeply alarmed by the rapid militarization of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. AI systems embedded into military kill chains are accelerating the speed and scale of military assaults in a manner that creates significant new risks for accountability in conflict and risks facilitating violations of international criminal, human rights, and humanitarian law.

We therefore call for tech companies and states to halt the provision of AI systems for use in the military kill chain and to take all steps to ensure that other AI systems they provide do not cause or contribute to violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL). This includes the use of AI decision-support systems, including target generation systems, remote biometric surveillance, and multimodal AI models, including large language models (LLMs). AI-accelerated warfare is rapidly becoming a means of rubber-stamping killing at speed and at scale, and currently no technical or procedural fixes can effectively prevent the lethal and devastating consequences that stem from the fundamental challenges it poses to international law."

I don't like . I think it's problematic in a lot of ways, that I won't repeat here as I believe you heard these (very much true) arguments 100 times.

But helped me quite a lot yesterday, and I don't know how to feel about that. By curiosity, I made it write code to create new useful commands for which will help me in my everyday work (for example `C-c m` now creates a PDF using `pdfmom -k` so I don't have to use a terminal at the same time when I use , `C-c t` adds `/|` before some punctuations signs following French typographic rules, …). These functions are very simple, most of you here could have written them by hand in less time than it took me to write the prompts, but I'm no developer, and don't have the time to become one, unfortunately. They work as intended (I can control that as, again, they're simple things), and I more or less understand them, as the described them. I even asked it questions to understand some parts of the code, and it answered (correctly it seems; I checked and as far as I can know, its answers seem legit), so I was able to modify them by hand to fine-tune them. One was wrong, but when I sent it the error message, it corrected it and explained the error to me.

It didn't feel like I was relinquishing brain power; in the contrary I learnt things. I could have done that by hand, and I would have learnt far more, but it would have taken months and I don't have months: a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

I still think that LLMs are a problem for our societies, but even more so than I thought as it seems to be actually useful in some cases.

                                                  Q. is the real effect of AI not that it replaces jobs, but rather that it transfers work to the consumer (and by doing so sees such 'work' disappear from official statistics)?

When chatbots provide answers previously provided by professionals often we end up doing the work ourselves (think of the YouTube tutorial); if we ask a chatbot what we need to do & then do it ourself the previous service evaporates.

Will AI's real impact disappear into a data blackhole?

Google is the only entity with the ability to modify the technology underpinning its AI-generated summaries and, therefore, “must be held accountable.” Furthermore, the court found that Google's line of defense lacked merit, since the challenged summary “contains statements that do not appear at all in the search results.”

I used to use Windows 9x, and it was unstable as hell, and you kept having to lean over backwards to get things to work. Then I used bleeding edge Linux, and at some point I've ended up running pure framebuffer tty for months because X11 was broken. But despite all the breakage (or maybe even because of it), it was fun. It was fun because random accidental breakage was the worst you could expect.

Nowadays, accidental breakage is rare. Things are relatively stable. However, every step of the way you have to watch out for bad actors. No, not criminals, they are rare. Evil corporations who are looking at every opportunity to fuck you up. Using computer is no longer fun, it's no longer a tool that helps you, and it's no longer your choice. You are forced to use it, and if you don't want to be hurt every step of the way, you have to spend all the effort on fighting back. And you're fucked up anyway, because even if you manage, your family and all the people around you won't care and will let their devices, their computers and their smartphones fuck you up.

I've started using FLOSS so many years ago, for the trivial reason that I didn't want to pay for software. I stayed because I enjoyed doing it. And I wanted to make a difference, I wanted to contribute positively to the world. Even if in a little way, but I wanted to be able to say that as much harm I've done to the planet, there's at least something positive to balance it out.

But nowadays I hate FLOSS. It's been overrun by the worst people in the world. The people who aren't happy with just fucking you up. They want everyone to keep fucking everyone up. It's the kind of horror where whatever you do, it turns out you're causing harm.

I don't trust my work anymore. So much of the software I touch turns out to be . When I file a pull request, I'm worried it will trigger reviews. When I file a bug, I'm worried it will trigger LLM responses. And today, I've learned that my old bug report to a project resulted in a dozen slop pull requests already. Whatever you do, folks smile and tell you "see, you fucked up the world even more after all".

Honestly, I don't know what to do. I hate all of this so much. But even if I managed to figure out something else to do for a living, I can't escape computers. And if I stop doing them, if I stop fighting them, I will only end up being fucked up more.

[?]Jesus Michał von Gentoo 🏔 (he) » 🌐

Dog days actually doesn’t originate from anything about a dog. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky and is named Sirius. It’s the eye in the constellation Canis Major, Greater Dog so Sirius is known as the Dog Star. The ancients used to believe when Sirius was in a certain summer position that it caused heat and drought.

A friend sent me this essay about digital life and the Christian. it’s at a prophecy news type site but it’s a good article absent any woo-woo or fringe stuff.

The author proposes the following question: Unlike a pastor who prayerfully prepares a message or a teacher who intentionally builds a lesson, algorithms are designed around a different objective. Their purpose is not spiritual maturity. Their purpose is attention. They are designed to learn what captures us, what keeps us watching, and what prevents us from moving on to something else. That reality raises an important question for Christians: If something is constantly shaping our thoughts, then who (or what) is teaching our minds?

Read the thought provoking article here: Christianity In The Age Of Algorithms

We are reminded always to ‘speak the truth in love’, a phrase from the verse at Ephesians 4:15. Here is ACBC counselor Susan Heck on the topic, and drills down to specifics, like ‘What is Speaking the Truth in Love?’, explains how to do it, why we must, and why we often don’t.

And we know that discernment often comes with it those difficult conversations. Treading that balance of speaking truth but in love without judgment is hard to do. Here is Eric Bancroft at TableTalk Magazine with a discussion about the difference. He said, “Judgmentalism is concerned about truth regardless of people. Discernment is concerned about truth because of people.”

Young women are offered biblical and practical advice in order to fulfill the high calling of being a Proverbs 31 woman.”

Anyone with a penny could enter, and discuss issues of the day, philosophy, ideas, or converse with anyone else at communal tables, regardless of class. Benjamin Franklin transported this idea into the US as well, forming the Junto Club where men could exchange ideas and discuss concepts. Here was also born Franklin’s notion of educating the men by creating a lending library, the first in the new world. The Philadelphia Library Company is still going.
