Good morning. 🪶🪶🪶

20 September 2026

When I opened the back door this morning, a raccoon was sitting under the birdfeeder in the middle of the yard. The moment the door swung open, it started moseying toward the hole‑beneath‑the‑fence, so I let Charlie out, knowing he could close the distance before the critter slipped through to the other side. The last thing I need is a backyard brawl between a dog and a raccoon. I’m not entirely sure how Charlie would behave if he actually caught up to one, but I suspect he’d pull up short—especially if the raccoon turned to face him. They’re big enough to account for themselves if it ever came to that.

I’ve seen Charlie run down squirrels and rabbits, but when he’s hovering over them and they freeze, he just stands there, unsure of the next step, and they bolt away—usually through the hole‑beneath‑the‑fence. Sometimes the squirrels skip the portal entirely, climbing the crepe myrtle next to the fence and launching themselves over to the other side like tiny paratroopers.

That hole‑beneath‑the‑fence is a portal between the backyard and the outside world, where the forest begins. To reach it, critters—mostly squirrels, rabbits, opossums, armadillos, and raccoons—have to cross a narrow strip of cleared ground between the fence and the woods, a zone patrolled by owls and hawks. Once they slip through, they still have to watch for Charlie. He’s ever vigilant, but he does live indoors and needs a human escort before he can address any trespassers.

“Pets are humanizing. They remind us we have an obligation and responsibility to preserve and nurture and care for all life.” — James Cromwell

“Some people are uncomfortable with the idea that humans belong to the same class of animals as cats and cows and raccoons.” — Phil Donahue

Ibises on the Wind

"Four white ibises sweep overhead in mid‑flight, their long, curved bills pointing forward like elegant instruments. Their wings stretch wide and bright against a soft sky, each feather catching the light as they glide above you.

The birds are arranged loosely, not in a perfect line but in a natural, fluid formation — one slightly ahead, another tilted at an angle, the others holding steady as if riding an invisible current. Their bodies look slender and purposeful, legs tucked neatly behind them, giving the impression of effortless motion.

The sky around them is pale and open, brushed with faint clouds that make the ibises appear even more luminous. The moment feels suspended — four silhouettes of grace passing overhead, close enough that you can almost imagine hearing the whisper of their wings as they move through the morning air." - Microsoft Copilot

White Sands, New Mexico — where the landscape gets wonderfully simple. 🤍

Miles of white gypsum dunes, a blue New Mexico sky, and those wispy clouds that seemed to echo the curves in the sand. Some places don’t need much else.

Fine ripples texture the sand in the foreground while soft, wispy white clouds curl and sweep across the sky, echoing the gentle shapes of the dunes. A few tiny desert plants break the otherwise vast, minimalist landscape.

What Is the Pawpaw? North America's Lost Fruit

The pawpaw fruit was a favorite of George Washington. It helped save the lives of the Lewis and Clark expedition. And it tastes sort of like a mango-banana creme brûlée. Why have you (probably) never heard of it?

So, my fiance has made a pretty solid point last night that I want a wider audience's opinions on.

We were talking about rock cairns. Ya know those stacked rocks that appear on hiking trails and on beaches. Those are rock cairns.

I absolutely hate them whenever I see them and will tear them down, but my fiance asked why?

And I have two good and one bad reason it seems.

The first good reason is to protect aquatic life. A lot of rock cairns are built in shallow creeks and streams which disrupts the habitat of crawdads and hellbenders. First it takes away their hiding spots and second the cairns often fall over and crush hellbenders to death an already endangered species.

Second is for trail safety reasons. I know out west they often use rock cairns as official trail markers in the dessert. But often folks will see the trail cairn and then make their own until the whole area is unnavigable  and risks hikers getting lost.

But my third and weakest reason is a general militant adherence to leave no trace and this is where my fiance called me out.

Leave no trace is not really for environmental protection reasons. It is for us to maintain the illusion of pristine nature for other people to enjoy. Yet, it is not pristine by virtue of being a maintained or frequented trail. Our presence has disrupted the natural world of that trail far more than a rock cairn has.

So that is my question for everyone. Why should we not build rock cairns on dry land when it doesn't risk getting a hiker lost?

A pale, brown pair of pine needles lies on top of the chanterelle.

Above it is a leafless, berryless green twig of a blueberry shrub and the background is a blurry green, with enough texture to discern more moss there.

It kind of reminds me of a little guy in a uniform, standing with his hands behind his back, watching a parade go by. I said “guy,” but honestly I have no idea—tufted titmice aren’t sexually dimorphic, so this one could just as easily be a she.

"The bird stands perched on a metal surface dotted with round holes, its tiny feet gripping the cool steel as if it owns the moment. It’s a tufted titmouse—small, alert, and full of personality. A soft gray crest rises from its head like a tiny windswept plume, giving it a look of perpetual curiosity. Its eyes are dark and bright, the kind that seem to take in everything at once.

The feathers along its back and wings are a gentle gray-brown, blending smoothly into a pale gray chest. Just beneath, near the tail, a warm wash of yellow glows like a hidden ember—subtle but unmistakably alive. The bird’s posture is upright and attentive, as though it has paused mid-adventure to survey its world.

Behind it, the background melts into a soft blur of earthy tones, making the titmouse appear even sharper, almost luminous. Every feather is crisp, every detail clear, capturing that fleeting moment when a wild creature sits still long enough to be truly seen." - Microsoft Copilot

We’re headed to Alexandria this morning for an appointment, and we treat these outings like a full‑blown day on the town. You might even say we’re wilding. We’ll probably grab a bite at some fancy restaurant and maybe wander through Sam’s Club. I know—completely out of control.

The only downside to making this trip at this time of year is the love bugs. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: they will absolutely decorate the front of my car.

Honestly, I don’t take my car out much anymore. There’s just nowhere I want to go badly enough to justify the trouble of actually going. Still, it’s only two years old and already has over 10,000 miles on it, mostly from visiting relatives. One day it might qualify as that mythical car driven by a little old man who only took it to church on Sundays. Of course, I’d have to start going to church for that to be true—and I’m not exactly “little.”

Speaking of driving, something amusing happened at a doctor’s appointment a few days ago. I was asked, “Do you still drive?” It felt like a rite of passage, the same kind of moment as when we stopped at Golden Corral years ago and were automatically given the Senior Citizen discount without asking. Unfortunately, that was nearly two decades ago.

C’est la vie. The beat goes on, at least for now.

"The image shows a lone tree standing in shallow water, shaped almost like a natural sculpture. Two trunks rise from the same base, splitting upward as if the tree is stretching in two directions at once. Its leaves are a mix of green and warm brown, giving the sense of a season in transition—summer fading into fall. The water around the tree is calm, gently reflecting its shape, and a small tuft of bright green grass grows at its feet like a tiny island.

Behind the tree, a grassy embankment slopes upward, dotted with smooth rocks that form a natural shoreline. Beyond that, a dense forest of deep green trees creates a rich backdrop, making the solitary tree in the water feel even more striking—almost like it’s quietly standing apart from the rest of the world. The overall mood is peaceful, reflective, and slightly mysterious, as if this tree has a story of resilience and solitude." - Microsoft Copilot
