Zerion 3.0 is close. Our own protocol stack replacing the inherited Bramble layers: Tor-only, post-quantum on every message, constant-rate cover traffic so an observer can’t tell messages from noise.
In final testing now, two more transports:
I2P as an opt-in alternative to Tor. And a Bluetooth mesh for communicating with no internet at all, blackouts, protests, disasters.
Tor stays mandatory. The rest is additive.

I've been working on ways to improve the air quality in my house, which includes monitoring, so I bought open source indoor/outdoor monitors from AirGradient, a Thai company.
Just want to report that I have gotten both monitors set up and I'm super duper impressed with the kits and the process. I've put together quite a few kits and these were among the easiest and best documented. The way they handle privacy is impressive, and the process has been perfect.

Because of recent ToS of #codeberg, I have to write few words.
I am from Iran. For years, we've been blocked by the US sanctions. These sanctions didn't hurt the regime much. But it does hurt me people greatly. The US isn't shy about doing whatever they want with other nations for their benefits or in the name of fighting terrorism.
#cryptocurrency has been a way for us to trade with parties abroad without any government, America or our own, being able to censor the money transfer.
Imagine, if one day the US government puts a sanction on the whole Europe, what will citizens of each side could do?
That's the power the traditional money system gives to the governments. If a US citizen wants to give me money for a job, or vice versa, what right does our governments have to prevent us from doing so? Why the governments have to interfere with every single thing their citizen does?

You might be interested to check out my posts around the concept "Community has no boundary" I talked about 5 years ago, e.g. in this topic: https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/standardizing-on-a-common-community-domain-as-ap-extension/1353
When I was still facilitator of #SocialHub I claimed that it wasn't a community in any real sense, with mostly #developers driving by on self-interested motives. It was just a discussion #forum, where a poor commons janitor (me) had to do the unthankful volunteer upkeep.
"Expectation mismatch" plays an important role when anyone mentions "community". A "community-driven #FOSS project" is partly the formal #governance that is in place, but mostly implicit cultural aspects. Knowing what you can expect is important, to not get disappointed.
A #fediverse instance to me isn't #community. I only use the Home timeline.
As we navigate fedi we 'weave' in and out of #communities seamlessly, without realizing it. A rich concept of inter-community #Social networking is possible, I think, but it should be carefully designed.

People crapping all over #Mozilla for having an X account now, yet I see #fedipeeps with X account links on their bios, #FOSS projects with X links on their homepages...
I despise X and Musk, but maybe be a little more consistent.
And I have publicly rebuked FOSS projects on #fedi for having X account links on their homepages, asking them just what Musk would have to do to get them to delete it.
If you're gonna go scorched earth, be consistent with it, otherwise it's just sparkling douchebaggery.

Who would you say are the best vocal supporters/activists pushing for Fedi, tech surveillance and free open source stuff?
Briar just went into maintenance mode, and their update named the problems they couldn’t get past. Some of them we’ve already shipped: account backup, attachments, reliable contact adding, channels.
For 3.0 we’re going further, replacing the inherited Briar/Bramble layers with our own protocol stack. Transport, wire format, sync, message model, all ours. Bramble stays the origin, but stops being the foundation.

I guess if code generated from GPL code is not also GPL then the GPL license is useless.
Do open source people like the Free Software Foundation believe closed sourced people would accept it in the other direction?
Imagine if the Linux folk had invented a GPL code generator trained on Microsoft and Oracle code. Would those companies have gone "yep, you got us, that's fair use, enjoy!" Haha NEVER.
I am pro the technology but it has to be done ethically and with consent
RE: https://floss.social/@doctormo/116927739358578223
Ah, finally, they’re saying the quiet parts out loud:
“Sure, the social angle of working on open source is important and often a very motivating part of the project, but in the end that’s a side benefit, not the _point_ of the project.” – Linus Torvalds
Now do you understand what I mean when I say “free” as in “freedom” versus “open” as in “open for business?”
Briar is going into maintenance mode, only security fixes from here. Not for lack of skill. They had no funding and built it in their spare time for years.
Zerion runs on their Bramble protocol and we owe them for it. The gaps they listed as unsolved, account backup, attachments, reliably adding contacts, we’ve shipped. Our own protocol stack is next.
The foundation stays. The work keeps moving.

An independent security audit is the single thing standing between “trust us” and “verified.” It’s also what Privacy Guides, journalists and security reviewers rightly ask for before recommending any messenger.
We’re raising funds to have Zerion audited by Radically Open Security. Every finding gets published, good or bad. That’s the deal.
If Zerion is useful to you, this is the most direct way to push it forward:
zerion.chat/donate.html
If you’ve been looking for a messenger with no phone number, no account, and no server that can be scanned or subpoenaed, that’s exactly what Zerion is.
Everything runs over Tor. Post-quantum encryption on every message. Hidden profiles and anti-forensics for people who need them. Free and open source, so you can verify all of it yourself.
We’ve grown to here on word of mouth alone. If it sounds useful, try it and tell one person who’d need it.
zerion.chat
Zerion 3.0 marks our transition to a fully independent protocol stack.
Briar has been an excellent foundation, but our goal is to be fully independent. We’re replacing the remaining Briar/Bramble protocols with our own transport, wire format, sync layer and message model.
One focus: resisting traffic analysis with constant-rate polling and cover traffic.

Apple says it would rather pull iMessage and FaceTime from the UK entirely than comply with new surveillance demands. Under the amended law, companies must clear security features with the government before release and scan encrypted messages on request.
Notice what makes that threat possible: Apple is a company with a headquarters, a server, and a product it can be forced to change or withdraw.
An app with none of those has nothing to weaken.

Zerion 2.0.6 is out.
No servers. No phone number. Everything over Tor. Post-quantum encryption (ML-KEM-768 + X25519) on every message, not just the handshake, so “harvest now, decrypt later” has nothing to harvest.
This release: adding contacts is rock solid, dropped connections recover instantly, pairing hardened. The whole build went through a full code and security review before shipping.
Open source, GPLv3. On F-Droid, Google Play, and direct APK.

Japan’s KDDI just disclosed a breach affecting up to 14.2 million email accounts across six providers. The detail that stands out: some passwords were stored in plain text, not even hashed.
This keeps happening because centralized services hold enormous pools of credentials, and one flaw in one vendor exposes all of them at once.
Zerion has no accounts, no passwords on any server, nothing pooled to steal. There’s simply no database to breach.
