What would happen to your timeline if mastodon.social went away?

(Reposting my tool that helps you figure this out.)

mastodon.social is the biggest server on the #fediverse , with over 21% of accounts, and an even higher percentage of #Mastodon accounts.

But what does that mean to you, personally? Let's say it went away tomorrow - (assuming you aren't on it yourself), how much of your timeline would vanish?

In my case, it turns out - not a lot, actually! The biggest sources of posts that I see are (1) a very small instance that doesn't even federate with much of the Fediverse, but many of my friends are there, (2) my own instance, (3) a large tech-focused instance that is still much smaller than mastodon.social. The big guy is only 5% of the post I've seen recently.

But this might be different for you!

Find out for yourself at https://moderation-explorer.online/ . Use 'advanced mode' to see this analysis, since you need to log into see your actual feed.

You might even decide to try moving to an instance that you're more connected to?

In many Western countries, our governments are directly complicit and, many times, profiting from Israel’s genocide.

Mastodon has always done what is best for #Mastodon. Over the years it has received lots and lots of criticism for that. I think the criticism was unwarranted. After all any #FOSS project is totally free to do what is best for it.

The problem is more that the 'fediverse community' if you can speak of that, and esp. the #ActivityPub developer community has let Mastodon get to where it is today, and insufficiently took its own path towards maturing the open standards and technology landscape. Leaving Mastodon forever in the driver's seat. Fediverse is now shaped in Mastodon's image, as a microblogging environment.

To this day #fediverse devs are super scared to break precious "Mastodon-compatibility", not showing the way to "Fediverse-compatibility". It is even unclear what "being part of the fediverse" even means, there's no consensus here.

Anyway, this is just a rant, but my rallying cry for making consolidation impossible is:

I'm currently on Moshidon, but I am curious what is out there these days.

I have not kept up with recent developments; last I checked, Tusky was still a thing, so I'm feeling old.

My preferences:

• Android.
• Free and open source.
• Will work with my GoToSocial instance without making me feel like a second class citizen to Mastodon users.
• No LLM-generated nonsense.

Having liberated ourselves, it is our duty to liberate others, who are still trapped, to give them their right to privacy.

Here's a plan of action:

1) Place ads on Facebook, explaining the benefits of #Mastodon and the #Fediverse
1. Freedom from Meta's censorship and algorithms.
2. A community owned, open social media platform.
3. Free and Open Source software.

2) When a user clicks, guide them through exporting their data from Facebook, and deleting their Facebook account.

3) Give them an optional questionnaire, asking about their interests, and match them with the right Mastodon instance.

4) If they skip the optional questionnaire, pick a random Mastodon instance for them.

5) Give them an option to enter into a Facebook migration registry.

6) Help them set up a Mastodon account and import their data.

7) If they opted into the migrant registry, reconnect them with their former Facebook connections, who also joined the registry. A reunion with your loved ones in a place without darkness. ☺️

My photograph of this intricate rock formation I captured at Newport Beach in the North of Sydney, NSW, Australia. Intricate patterns in layers of sedimentary rocks display a range of earthy tones. The formations reveal the natural beauty of geological processes. A detailed close-up of weathered sandstone revealing beautiful flowing layers, intricate patterns and rich earthy colours. Shades of rust, ochre, brown, cream and soft grey sweep across the rock surface, creating an almost abstract appearance. Shaped naturally by time, weather and erosion, the stone resembles a piece of ancient artwork painted by nature. Near the water's edge around the headlands, you can also find the finer-grained, reddish layers of the Newport Formation (part of the Narrabeen Group), which also includes interbedded shales and siltstones.

#Mastodon / #Fediverse idea: allow posts to be flagged as an “announcement”, which will appear in all followers' notifications, not just their home feeds.

People could use this to inform followers of a major event that they mustn't miss, like migrating to a different instance.

Only thing is, this feature sounds like it'd be easy to abuse…

Also, it would need a different name. “Announce” is what ActivityPub calls boosts.

LEAVING META
WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR LIFE 💎

After my posting about Meta over the past two days, one thing became very clear.

A lot of people would LIKE to leave Facebook, Instagram, or both. But parts of their actual lives are all tangled up in them.

So don’t make leaving a purity test. Start somewhere. Remove Facebook from your phone and use it only on your laptop, or better still, only on your desktop when you genuinely need it.

STOP POSTING TO META. STOP FEEDING THE TIMELINE.

Move conversations with real friends to your email, text, Signal, phone calls, Mastodon account, or wherever works for you, away from Meta.

TELL PEOPLE WHERE ELSE THEY CAN EASILY FIND YOU.

If you run a business, start putting your email address and/or website URL everywhere you promote your business so Facebook is not your only front door.

Download anything you actually want to keep. Then, when you’re ready, deactivate or delete what you no longer need.

Maybe you keep Messenger for Aunt Doris. Maybe you keep Instagram because your local café apparently believes websites were abolished in 2014.

Fine.

The point isn’t ideological cleanliness.

THE POINT IS REDUCING YOUR DEPENDENCE.

Every conversation you move elsewhere is one conversation Meta no longer owns the doorway to.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO ESCAPE THE META CAGE IN ONE HEROIC LEAP.

Just start opening the door.
