Der EU-Ministerrat möchte die #Chatkontrolle (1.0) um jeden Preis durchdrücken. Schon diesen Dienstag und damit unmittelbar vor der Sommerpause soll er auf die Tagesordnung des EU-Parlaments.
"Der Streit über das digitale Briefgeheimnis in der EU erreicht kurz vor der Sommerpause eine neue Eskalationsstufe. Nachdem die Verhandlungen über die Chatkontrolle 2.0 – also das verpflichtende, verdachtsunabhängige Scannen verschlüsselter Kommunikation – wegen des anhaltenden Widerstands im EU-Parlament ins Stocken geraten sind, prescht der Ministerrat nun mit einem juristischen Manöver vor.
Die Mitgliedstaaten wollen die am 3. April ausgelaufene Übergangsregelung zur freiwilligen Überwachung von Nachrichten durch Technologiekonzerne im Eilverfahren reaktivieren.
Einen entsprechenden Standpunkt für eine „neue“ Verordnung hat der Rat am Donnerstag im schriftlichen Umlaufverfahren angenommen, um eine drohende Rechtslücke zu schließen und den Druck auf die Abgeordneten zu erhöhen."

Kameras an Alex und Görli: Wann die KI-Videoüberwachung in #Berlin startet
‚Im neuen Polizeigesetz wurde die KI-basierte Überwachung kriminalitätsbelasteter Orte erlaubt. Wann diese startet – und was sie kostet.
Ab April werden spezielle Kameras am Alexanderplatz in Mitte, an der Warschauer Brücke in Friedrichshain sowie am Kottbusser Tor und am Görlitzer Park in Kreuzberg installiert. Das erfuhr die Berliner Morgenpost aus Sicherheitskreisen. Damit startet die durch Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) unterstützte Überwachung dieser kriminalitätsbelasteten Orte (kbO) in einer Testphase.
Möglich gemacht hat das die Änderung des Polizeigesetzes ASOG vergangenen Dezember. Nach der Testphase sollen die weiteren kbOs Rigaer Straße in Friedrichshain sowie Hermannstraße und Hermannplatz in Neukölln in der zweiten Jahreshälfte folgen…‘

‚Berlin will bald erstmals Straßen und Plätze mit Videokameras überwachen. Hinter diesen Kameras soll ein System laufen, das automatisch analysiert, was die abgebildeten Menschen gerade tun. Es soll Alarm geben, sobald es eine Tätigkeit erkennt, die für die Polizei von Interesse ist.
Der Chaos Computer Club (CCC) warnt vor einem derartigen Ausbau der Verhaltensüberwachung im öffentlichen Raum. „Er bedeutet einen großen Schritt in Richtung automatisierter Dauerbeobachtung“, schreibt er in einer Pressemitteilung. Dabei sei die Technik vor allem eines: „teurer, aber gefährlicher Mumpitz“.‘

‚Test mit solcher Software laufen bereits andernorts in Deutschland: seit 2018 in Mannheim und seit 2023 in Hamburg. Wir haben uns in beiden Städten umgehört, was Menschen, die dort mit der Technologie zu tun haben, den Berliner*innen raten können, die sie jetzt ungefragt vor die Nase gesetzt bekommen.
Zur Videoüberwachung an sich haben wir zudem nach Köln gesehen. Dort filmen 106 Kameras den öffentlichen Raum, die ersten wurden schon 2016 installiert. Und auch aus der Berliner Opposition gab es Hinweise, wie es für überwachungskritische Menschen in der Hauptstadt jetzt weitergehen kann.‘

EU-voorzitter Von der Leyen zal in september tijdens de Staat van de Unie voorstellen aankondigen voor een EU-breed socialmediaverbod voor kinderen, zo meldt Euractiv op basis van EU-functionarissen en diplomaten. Het is nog onduidelijk welke minimale leeftijd de Europese Commissie voorstelt en hoe de leeftijdsgrens wordt gehandhaafd. De Europese Commissie maakte in april bekend dat het wil dat EU-lidstaten snel online leeftijdsverificatie gaan invoeren.
In mei pleitte Von der Leyen voor de invoering van online leeftijdsverificatie en wees daarbij ook naar de whitelabel-app die Brussel voor dit doel ontwikkelde. Verschillende Europese landen, zoals Frankrijk, Spanje, Duitsland, Denemarken en Griekenland, hebben inmiddels plannen aangekondigd voor de invoering van een socialmediaverbod en online leeftijdsverificatie, of zijn hiermee bezig.
Tegenstanders van online leeftijdsverificatie stellen dat het een backdoor voor surveillance is en waarschuwen dat het de privacy van iedereen bedreigt en tot censuur leidt."

"PRO-Kamerlid Kathmann heeft staatssecretaris Aerdts vandaag om opheldering gevraagd. "Deelt u onze zorgen dat deze uitspraak gevolgen kan hebben voor de rechtmatige data-uitwisseling tussen de Europese Unie en de Verenigde Staten? Wat zouden die gevolgen volgens u kunnen zijn?" De bewindsvrouw moet ook duidelijk maken of Nederland voorbereid is op een scenario waar het Data Privacy Framework ongeldig wordt verklaard.
Kathmann wil verder weten welke toezichthouder moet toezien op de (on)rechtmatige uitwisseling van data met Amerikaanse partijen als het DPF ongeldig wordt verklaard en of er scenario’s denkbaar zijn waarin aanvullende maatregelen niet volstaan en data niet meer rechtmatig met Amerikaanse partijen kan worden gedeeld. "Deelt u de mening dat de enige zekere maatregel om onrechtmatige data-uitwisseling met de Verenigde Staten te voorkomen is om veel minder afhankelijk te worden van Amerikaanse techbedrijven?", vraagt Kathmann als laatste. Aerdts heeft drie weken om met een reactie te komen."

A newly disclosed Linux kernel vulnerability called Bad Epoll lets an unprivileged local user gain root access on affected Linux systems and Android devices.
The flaw is notable because it exists in the same kernel code where Anthropic's AI model Mythos previously found a different vulnerability, but missed this one. A patch is available, and affected systems should be updated.

They're also getting really testy about us "regular Joes" showing up and voting against publication of the deliberately-weak solo PQ recommendation.
You can practically feel their frustration - "We stuffed this list to pass this vote, and they're stuffing it against us!".
