The EU Kept Message-Scanning. Encryption Got a Carve-Out.
EU governments restored the lapsed rule letting platforms scan for child abuse images, to April 2028, and exempted end-to-end encrypted chats. A real win, but fragile: more MEPs voted against than for, and the permanent 'chat control' fight over breaking encryption is still coming.

"When it comes to making a new, good internet, there's plenty of room for labor law, civil rights legislation, antitrust, and other legal regimes. But privacy has the biggest constituency, gets us the most bang for the buck, and has the fewest harmful side-effects. It's a policy we can all agree on, even if we don't agree on much else. It's a coalition in potentia that would be unstoppable in reality." - @pluralistic

Banks have reported cash over $10,000 to FinCEN since 1970 — a threshold never adjusted for inflation. It would be near $80,000 in today's money, so routine transactions now flood a database federal investigators mine at will.

A dictatorship can’t function unless it has subservient lackeys. If we reduce the pool of candidates through shame and humiliation, it reduces the harm that can be done.

“Some notable entries in the document include:
- Accurint: a LexisNexis tool for locating people that contains all sorts of personal data like addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, and more
Chameleon: a tool which provides “Anonymized means to conduct online investigations, web research, and undercover work”
- Locate X: a tool that lets ICE search a massive database of location data harvested from smartphones. Made by Babel Street, the tool uses data sourced through ordinary apps installed on peoples’ phones or the advertising ecosystem. 404 Media previously reported how the tool could be used to track phones at abortion clinics after privacy advocates gained access to the technology. “It allows investigators to draw a digital fence around an address or area, pinpoint mobile devices that were within that area from mobile data sources,” the document reads
- Cobwebs: a social media tracking tool. 404 Media previously reported Cobwebs also includes Webloc, which can monitor phone locations in entire neighbourhoods
- ISO ClaimSearch: a database that contains property and casualty insurance claims and medical bills. The database is nearly all encompassing and contains details on more than 1.8 billion insurance claims and 58 million medical bills”

What Happened When #Flock Came to My Town
On Tuesday night, the city council of my small town of Irmo, #SouthCarolina , voted to install 22 new Flock cameras. That’ll bring the total up to 33. With a population of only 12,000 or so, it means there’ll be one Flock #camera for every 300 residents. That means there will be more Flock cameras in my town than police officers. The city council — the governing body consisting of the mayor and 4 councilpersons — voted for Flock expansion despite presentations from residents about the dangers of what they described as the creeping #surveillance state.

#Leaked Document Shows the #Surveillance Tech at ICE’s Fingertips
A leaked document shows the spread of surveillance and investigative capabilities that Immigration and #Customs Enforcement (#ICE ) officials have access to agency wide, from location data harvested from #smartphones , to facial recognition apps that can reveal someone’s #identity , to tools that let the agency stay #anonymous online and approach people #undercover. The document covers everything from monitoring social media to tracking the movements of vehicles.
It is rare for the public to see such a large list of ICE’s technology capabilities in a single document. 404 Media has published the whole document, called “ICE Wide Analytical Tools,” below.

"For weeks, Verona, Wisconsin tried to get Flock to remove the three automated license plate cameras that its city council had voted to stop using. Flock told city employees not to remove the cameras, and a Flock employee told city officials that they were unsure whether the cameras could be remotely disabled, which led the town to decide to put black plastic trash bags over them until Flock eventually removed the cameras itself, according to emails obtained using a public records request by 404 Media.
The emails give insight into the process cities face while deFlocking themselves after voting not to renew a contract with the AI surveillance company. As we’ve previously reported, multiple cities around the country have decided to put black trash bags over their Flock cameras while they wait for them to be removed; this is in part because, until the cameras are physically removed by Flock, cities are unsure whether they have the legal right to remove the cameras themselves and are not sure whether they can disable their recording operations. The emails show Verona city officials telling each other that they had made multiple requests to Flock to have the cameras removed, and show a work order from Flock in which the cameras were set to have maintenance performed on them rather than being removed."

As a coalition we are concerned that ASFA would introduce significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities and undermine user #Privacy that far outweigh the alleged benefits to competition supporters claim will flow from this legislation.
This is a great list of tips for improving your Signal privacy from @yaelwrites.
I found this part especially meaningful:
“Turning off biometrics makes it annoying to use your phone…If that’s you, remember that both Android and iOS have a quick lockout that forces a passcode and disables biometrics until you re-enter it: on iPhone, hold the side + volume button until the power-off screen appears, then cancel; on most Androids, hold power and tap Lockdown.”

There is no single blueprint for global control. There does not need to be.
Digital ID, CBDCs, health surveillance, AI governance, pathogen monitoring and neurotechnology are being built separately—but increasingly operate through compatible infrastructure.
This evidence-graded dossier maps the system, the funding and the safeguards still missing.

For the past three decades, #BigTech have been secretly, continuously, systematically tracking all aspects of our personal lives, and they have been exploiting that data to extract more and more profits. To the delight of many technology fanciers, all these nefarious acts are now #AI powered. It is only during this period of exploration that IT had its first billionaire.
We Americans have tacitly accepted this invasive surveillance, in exchange for essential modern goods and services, like toilets that flush automatically after shitting and shit-posting on social media in the wee small hour of the morning. So long as the two parties involved have the “meeting of the minds”, this process counts as a “fair exchange” under law.
It is now evident that our federal #government is using those same #surveillance technologies and procedures to monitor, control, manipulate, and oppress us. Regardless of our nonchalance, this process is "government overreach" in violation of our constitutional rights to privacy.
Why so dramatic a difference between these two forms of privacy violation that employ the same technologies and procedures?
• The first form of privacy violation is a private act that induces us to waste our time and money, individually and collectively.
• The second form of privacy violation is a governmental action that erodes our individual #freedom and our collective #democracy.
But we #American citizens are equally unperturbed by both forms of #privacy violation.
If you have been wondering about the effectiveness of the social media ban of under 15 year olds, this study got you :)
Spoiler: 92%+ of kids age 14-15 in #Australia still use it 🥳
Meanwhile IMO forced verification of users had a much better success rate 😉
