Today was a good day. A really good day. It’s been a while since I’ve had one of those.

Four of our family of seven went to the Oregon coast. We ventured over a bay to a peninsula, where we’ve never been. And it was the best choice we could have made.

We visited three beaches and a scenic loop. It was SO beautiful. We brought good food with us, and ate it while looking out over the vast ocean.

Oh, and that’s about as close as I’ve been to a family of deer. There were three of them, foraging on the side of the road.

🌩️ Treetops glow with ghostly UV sparks during thunderstorms — and scientists just filmed it for the first time

During thunderstorms, a strong negative charge builds up in storm clouds. This induces a positive charge on the ground below, which travels up through trees to the highest point it can reach: the tips of leaves.

There, the concentrated charge creates an electric field strong enough to excite surrounding air molecules into a faint plasma. When those molecules relax, they release crackles of ultraviolet light called coronae.

Researchers converted a Toyota Sienna into a mobile UV observatory and chased storms across the southeastern US. Their footage revealed 41 coronae on a single sweetgum tree during one 90-minute storm, sparking, hopping between leaves, and fading in fractions of a second to several seconds.

If humans could see in UV, the effect would look like thousands of glowing fireflies dancing across the forest canopy every time a thunderstorm passes overhead.
