Yes, I know Wayland uses compositors and not the window manager / server concepts from x11; I used #river as a bootstrap to handle the compositor part and just did a bunch of config / customizations / etc - window manager style.

This was a relatively trivial exercise involving adding an additional tty and abusing it with a JSON line protocol to exchange messages with a crappy little daemon.

That worked enough, and was enough to nerd snipe much smarter people than me to look at doing it properly, using the VSOCK API.

I'm going to take an educated guess that 6.12 failed to build, but this didn't get our LLM backport experts to think that something is wrong and they just pushed it to 6.6 and older where it didn't fail to build.

In short, I think “Microsoft loves open source" but not NetBSD 😆.

Then I updated pkgsrc with "cvs update -dP"  and edited /usr/pkg/etc/pkgin/repositories.conf to change the release number.

I hope that’s correct!
The update of all packages was successful, so I’m assuming it is.

Is it normal that "pkgin upgrade" re-download and reinstall all packages, even those that are already the same version?

I'd say the overall experience has been very positive.

P.S. i3status gives me an error if I use UTF-8 "icons" (it worked with 10.1), but it's not really a big deal.

A new Linux kernel patch could make the Steam Deck feel even smoother in games.

Early testing shows up to a 31% improvement in 1% low FPS, reducing frame drops and stuttering.

The boost comes from a new Linux feature called epp_boost, which helps the Steam Deck's AMD CPU respond faster by managing power more efficiently.

This Linux Mint modification dramatically speeds up reboots. Waking up the computer from sleep is no longer so slow.

This disables updating a database for finding files on my machine, a feature I did not actually want. It's worth disabling if it speeds up the machine when I want to use it.

This was the attitude Linux nerds had in the 90s, too. Tech nerds in general had a lot of insecurities that we took out on other people by being better-than-thou lords of our little domains.

I just found out that @borgbackup #Borg #BorgBackup is vibe coded now. That's a tragedy. Really upsetting, to be honest.
