For anyone using a third party Mastodon app I highly recommend you check out their privacy policy. While Mastodon nor most instances data mine, I’ve leaned many apps (even many developed by one person) do collect alarming amounts of data.

Mastodon itself has no use for this data , which means they are collecting to use for their own means.

am I the only one annoyed by so frequent #GrapheneOS updates???

I am already pissed off one can not disable automatic download of updates, one can disable the updates app completely, but I would prefer to manually check for updates and review available update before downloading not to completely disable updates

then after applying updates it takes ages "optimizing apps" see this screenshot, only 8 optimized apps out of 35 and it has taken 19 minutes already and in the meantime the phone is very slow and overheated :(

Just tried to reboot my Pixel 6 into #Android 16, and…the #phone is stone-cold dead. Black screen, no response to buttons, power+volume doesn't work.

This is not acceptable!

When a PC operating system gets bricked, you can still boot into BIOS, enable booting from USB, and use a rescue/installer USB stick to repair or reinstall the OS.

I was starting to look at the #Commodore phone until I saw that their launcher looked like some of the super-minimalist launchers I've seen on #Android from #FDroid, so I just started experimenting with that, instead.

Currently on "Last Launcher," but I have a couple others installed to play with.

I was on #KISSLauncher for the longest time, but they seem to have a lenient AI policy now, and I'm avoiding that kind of stuff whereever I can afford to.

Now trying [Be nice] in my seemingly unending search for the right #NoSlop #Android #Launcher for me. XD

F-Droid & Basic clients can update unattended on Android 12+ since early 2024. Apps are sandboxed by your Android, we function as a "package manager for #Android". We have some checks in place, but true, we can't check billions of line of code (half by AI now 🙃). We trust the devs, but we also verify, is that bad?

"Europe wasted no time using its landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA) to try to rein in Big Tech. Companies like Apple, Meta, and Google have faced steep fines and orders to modify their business practices since the law came into force in 2024. And the hits keep on coming for Big Tech in Europe. After several months of consideration, the European Commission has announced new DMA measures that will force Google to support interoperability and competition in the European Union, and Google is not happy about it.

The new “specification measures” cover two elements of Google’s business: Android phones and search. Both changes could theoretically increase competition and give users more choices, but Google claims they will undermine privacy and security. But as a “gatekeeper” under the DMA, Google has no choice but to comply. As the European Commission points out in its announcement, these decisions are legally binding.

On Android, Google will have to open up access to competing AI platforms. Currently, Google’s Gemini gets preferential access to the system. Gemini is preloaded on all Google-certified Android phones and can wake up in response to the “Hey Google” hot word. Google’s AI also includes system and app automation features, screen content access, and more.

“Third-party AI assistants are therefore limited in how they can offer their innovative services, making them less attractive to 60% of EU users who have an Android device,” the Commission said in its press release."

#Google owes its existence to the open web, but today, its technological “innovations” have much to do with locking users into a “walled garden.” The latest of these is “reCAPTCHA Mobile Verification,” an experimental initiative that will let companies block users if they are running independent, "de-googled" versions of #Android. Back when I was diagnosed with #diabetes, I've found two apps to help me. Both were proprietary.

The first one came from the glucometer's manufacturer, and it featured the ability to copy its readings over Bluetooth. It also had a pretty useful bolus calculator. However, it was also annoying in a number of ways: it required an account with all the implied data sharing, was premiumware (though using their glucometer implied a free "pro" version), was quite childish in design, didn't respect disabled animations or dark theme.

The second one was an independent Polish app to compute carbs from meals. It wasn't perfect, but it had a rich database of products and quite a few convenient features (like copying meals or calculating carbs based on recipes). Unfortunately, the authors went full way into AI hype, and while I didn't use any of the "AI" features (they were premiumware anyway), the app itself was becoming increasingly crappy.

Eventually, this motivated me to look for a new app. I've settled for #Diaguard. It's just got the basics: meal composition and computing carbs, plus letting me log blood sugar and insulin doses manually. It used to have a bolus calculator before I used it, but it was removed over legal concerns. Still, it's open source, it's nice, it's got no crap and it respects the dark theme. And honestly, given that I've already reached the point of overriding bolus calculator, I've figured out it's enough for me.

In fact, it's so "enough" that I'm not even using it regularly. I mean, if my blood sugar is predictable and my meals are predictable, there's no reason to waste time logging them. The app is there to assist me when I need it, not force me to use it.

I still keep the two other apps installed. The first one in case I had doubts over insulin doses and wanted to use the bolus calculator. The second one over my database of meals; though I had already exported it, so I just need to figure out if the export is complete enough.
