Is it reassuring to convince people that AI is going to make the world better with an ad set to a David Bowie song about the end of the world? Meta’s newest commercial drives home that an AI-reliant future “is for everyone.” The song strikes a different tone. Read more from @Techcrunch that also links to the ad:

A new bill dubbed the "AI Kill Switch Act" is expected to be introduced today in the U.S. and would give the government the authority to order AI companies to shut down or slow down their models, Politico reports.
RE: https://social.coop/@cwebber/116965517124765719
The term 'AI' has become so vague as to be almost meaningless, or rather meaning too many things.
I propose we move on to the term "thinking machines", because these LLMs don't 'think' at all, and that is the problem.

Bravo Mayor Chow for taking action to protect Toronto residents from surveillance pricing.
It’s time to end this predatory practice before it becomes normalized - yet another daily digital injustice.
So far, the Carney government has promised vague action in the future, from a new agency that doesn’t even exist yet.
Instead, we need a national ban on surveillance pricing right now. That’s what Premier Wab Kinew has done in Manitoba, what NDP premiers in waiting like Marit Stiles and Claudia Chender are fighting for, and what Mayor Chow is proposing.
Your personal data should be yours alone, not a commodity for Big Tech and Big Retail to mine, sell, and use to rip you off.

There are three parts of this act, which I enjoy in particular:
1) That unnatural, weird pose that the robot does on the floor 😜
2) Black blankets that they put on the robot as if it had died - hiding the nasty gore :P
3) The awkward reaction of the emergency response team, trying to remove the robot from stage.

Here, an #AI under the control of a company hacked another company. There was actus reus that breached several federal and state statutes and regulations. There is an identified culprit. There is a victim. So then, these questions.
Which entities have jurisdiction over the matter? Can mens rea be ascribed? Should the company, a legal person, be assigned blame? Should the blame also flow to the controlling humans? What punishments are appropriate? Does the victim have a recourse under tort law as well?

This is the script of my national network radio report yesterday on how #AI is causing massive shortages of memory chips, impacting a wide array of consumer products, and about pushback against AI around the country. As always there may have been minor wording variations from this script as I presented this report live on air.

Yeah, so this is yet another example of the technological razor blade society is sliding down these days. Indeed smartphone shipments have had their biggest drop in more than 13 years, And of course, the cause is ... AI, yet again making people's lives miserable.
It all ties in to the construction of these massive data centers that are now despised around the country. This is especially true in the rural areas where the Big Tech AI companies can find unspoiled land that they can then spoil with air and noise pollution, destroying those communities, causing power rate increases, water shortages, homes being forcibly taken from their long-time owners -- you know the drill.
And what goes into those monstrous data centers? Lots of memory chips. So many chips for AI services -- that in many cases are wrecking our society -- that it has created enormous shortages that are affecting all manner of consumer products, including PCs, laptops, and many others, including, of course, smartphones.
Unsurprisingly, this shortage, which has pushed up memory chip prices by something like 300% in the last year or so, is most impacting lower and mid-range smartphones where they can make up over 65% of the total cost of materials. Meanwhile, the higher end units, for the folks that who afford to drop a grand or two on a super-fancy smartphone, aren't being affected as much since those users are typically not bothered by the resulting increases in the already premium prices.
Meanwhile, the hatred of AI as being pushed by Big Tech has spread across all sectors of the U.S. -- both political parties, independents, all age groups, all economic levels. At least 70% of Americans are fed up with AI. They don't want what large language model generative AI is offering: Misinformation, lost jobs, endless AI spam, AI scams and phishes to steal your money, vehicle surveillance tracking systems, chatbots involved in suicides and murders, AI Slop taking over social media, YouTube and seemingly everywhere else around the Net, burying worthwhile content under a deep sea of AI garbage.
And even as this topic has burst from being a techie issue to a mainstream society issue, with media stories everywhere about AI abuses, the politicians by and large still don't get it. The federal government criticized New York State when a few days ago they declared a one year moratorium on data center construction. Other states, red and blue are considering their own moratoriums or have already paused or blocked various data center projects that were likely to ruin communities.
Irrespective of what the pro-AI politicians say, the vast majority of people are now seeing through false Big Tech AI claims and are pushing back against those firms and the politicians who support them. And that movement is growing every day, all over the country, bringing together people on this issue who usually can't agree on much else.
Unfortunately, this isn't likely to help the memory chip shortage anytime soon. Current predictions suggest that shortages and crazy high prices for memory might last until 2030 or even beyond. We can hope that it turns out not to be that bad, but for now make sure that you don't drop your phone, because you might suffer serious sticker shock if you have to buy a new one anytime soon. And for that, we can thank AI.

Do you need a DPIA before deploying AI?
Almost always yes when personal data is involved. UK GDPR and EU GDPR Article 35 require a data protection impact assessment where processing is likely to result in high risk, and the ICO expects most AI deployments to meet that threshold.

One of the worst (but by far not the worst) effects of genAI as technology: Seeding doubt & distrust in the last remaining parts of shared reality and in people's creativity or their skills... So much brain rot and cognitive bias!
Having just spent half a day in the darkroom yesterday, mixing chems, preparing emulsions, test strips, refining tone curves, making prints, experimenting with toners and sharing some work-in-progress shots — this morning I was waking up to an accusation that I keep publishing AI generated images (this time supposedly the one below) and not label or CW them as such. WTF! So much for trying to hone an actual wetware skill/craft...
Apart from feeling pretty offended by that comment, I wonder how are makers supposed to address these insinuations? How many people are already sharing these doubts and how do they change perception and value/role of art in general? Do we need to document our process in ever greater detail as some form of "certificate of authenticity"? I feel the urge to upload more timelapses of my processing (analog and digital) or even RAW camera files to prove AI-free workflow or source materials... Some receipts are here (but also in my TL):
https://makertube.net/c/noircountry/videos
For my color photography, my editing is purposefully very lightweight and mostly limited to adjusting levels, minor color adjustments (e.g. for shots taken with polarization filter), cropping, resizing with sharpening (unsharp masking or Lanczos kernel). Since some of my older lenses have auto-focus issues, I use an old version of Topaz for denoising/sharpening, but only rarely and as subtly as possible. For B&W there's usually more layered/refined level/contrast editing & some masking... In general my mantra is to "get it (mostly) right in camera" and also have written about this previously:
